You can't turn on the smartphone wifi to use with appleTV and use itself to connect to AppleTV?

Yes the apple tv has to be connected to WiFi in order to work. But I have noticed that you can still airplay without having the Iphone connected to the same WiFi network. As long as the bluetooth and WiFi settings are turned on your phone, the Airplay is available.

Not sure about using the same phone as a hotspot and using it to airplay at the same time. I will try it once I get a chance.

Apple TV Powered by USB mod done. Works perfect. No need for a power inverter to run the Apple TV on 115AC.

I removed the old 115vac Power supply and replaced it with a $5 LM2596 Buck DC-DC Converter ordered from Amazon. The whole mod cost less than $10.

Good job, but Appletv is quite big to fit in the back and Appletv wifi streaming is quite unreliable unless your wifi connection is solid and fast.

I have a Gen3 Apple TV. Is actually quite small when compared to the 1st gen. Is about 1" tall by 4" wide. I've been driving around with Vevo on streaming music videos with no problems so far.
