2011 A8L Navigation issue
I have a 2011 A8L and love the car. I purchased it used a few months ago and soon found out that the navigation is not showing me in the correct spot. It sometimes works but less and less. Is the simplest fix to replace the antena on the roof. I got it uncovered and looks simple to replace. My software is old. Could that be the problem?
Is there a place to see how many satellites I am connected to?
Could a fiber optic line be kinked somewhere or loose to cause my nav to show me in the wrong spot?

I would scan it--or get it scanned--to look for errors in the Nav module. I mean VCDS (VAG-COM) or the dealer or shop equivalents, not cheap P code generic motor scanner. Likely to find something specific to be fixed. It won't turn on a warning light or anything like that for a non-critical system like Nav. The software version shouldn't matter. Yes, it could be antenna or something like that, but scan is likely to be informative and not just guessing. VCDS can test optical too, but if location is wrong, I doubt it is that.

Just drove the car and the navigation display was mirrored. The map appeared to be mirrored on the display. Then everything all of a sudden worked again. It is being scanned later today...

Just had it scanned. I was told that there were no codes showing. All appeared normal. Auto scan with vcds showed no problems in any module. The mechanic was wondering if you knew of any soft code changes he should try.
Would it be worth me pulling the unit and directly attaching an EBay nav antenna to rule out the head having problems? Any more recommendations? Thanks!

Just in case, try the basic MMI three button reset.
You could also try a full battery disconnect if the MMI reset does nothing. Maybe 30 minutes. No special insider/D4 knowledge here.
Do it outside with a clear sky view so it has best shot of finding satellites right away.
After that, maybe an antenna issue. Dealer may have to diagnose. Can also search other boards for other posts with similar symptoms--most any of the fairly modern (3G) ones have this same general system, C7 A6, Q5, A/S 5, etc.

Way too complex a system to guess at. Make sure to understand this is not the old box in the trunk stuff like my D3, which itself also had the optical backbone. On my Q5 with the same general set up as D4 (the somewhat later 3+ or whatever they call it w/ AudiConnect), mine simply suddenly flashed to dark toward the end of a 200 mile road trip, made a brief noise maybe like a drive crash, and that was it. A 40 Gig drive where we or Europe probably sold the plant to China ten years ago for quasi scrap. > $3000 part under warranty; no internal repair parts via dealer. Your could be antenna (maybe top guess), may be the whole master unit, or maybe is just a software patch per an Audi TSB or something.
My practical experience has been more trying to straighten out a aftermarket dedicated head unit from one of the big Japanese players. Would lose its location. New antenna helped but didn't fully address.
Your next stop after battery idea really is dealer. You can also try searching for the factory TSB's that may deal with Nav, but hard to find systematically. As I also suggested, do a thorough web search. And said more directly, if you want to try to resolve, expect to spend at least two hours, maybe four, on your keyboard and to open perhaps hundreds of links and read/skim. Point Google at Audiworld as your most likely place to find other prior reports of similar issues. It is unlikely to be just a few clicks once you exhaust the first few easier tries I've been trying to flag.
