Why would they want to take control away from the driver and who do you believe they are? I've never heard anyone make an argument for this or even hint at it. Some folks may like having the option of "drive me home, pls car" after a night of partying. Some may just have had a rotten day at work and not want to deal with traffic. I can see some use cases.
The technology is clearly available, and hopefully like start/stop systems in NAR they will be able to be disabled with a button.
At the owners discretion.
We choose these vehicles because as derf once said they "are very much a drivers car", not as mass transit or out of apathy for the experience they provide.
If someone goes out drinking, they shouldn't have driven there in the first place in my book.
I hire a chauffeur or in a group select a DD if I'm going to have a couple glasses of wine with dinner.
Anything less would be a complete lack of personal responsibility on my part.
We could eliminate the vehicle all together at that point and make it virtual reality
