Default 2016 S8 Ordered and some questions...

Hi All,

My name in Jay and I am in the Pacific Northwest. We are in the process of acquiring a family sedan and decided that the S8 would be the ideal vehicle for us with excellent performance and comfort. This car would be used as a daily driver as well as our highway vehicle of choice for trips. We also have a Range Rover Sport which we could use if we needed more luggage space. We really liked the S8 both for its size (NWB) and it performance.

We have ordered a 2016 S8 with the following options :

Moonlight Blue
Audi Design Vermont Brown interior
Cold Weather
Driver Assistance
21" 5 Arm Rotor in Titanium finish

We passed on the B&O and night vision. The interior combo was more important to us than these options, so we ordered the Audi Design interior with the full leather package in Vermont Brown. Music in our cars has always played second fiddle to performance/comfort as I am yet to come across a system that performs with similar imaging/tonality/fidelity like our dedicated 2 channel system at home. Cars are not just the right environment for a hifi system IMO. As long as it plays music with decent fidelity, the BOSE would probably be Ok for us.

Any thoughts on the order?

I do have a question on the wheel/tires. It looks like the only option on the S8 is 21" wheels with summer tires. This would not work for us in the Pacific Northwest. I would like to run high performance all seasons year round. I have used the Continental DWS in our other cars and have been really happy with its performance. However, they do not make one in the 21" wheel size.

What options do I have? I do not mind stepping down to a 20" wheel if it would open up more choices for all seasons. Is there any performance downgrade going from 21" to 20"? Do any 20" wheels fit the S8? I really like the Galvano wheels that come with the A8 4.0T Sport model. It could be an option.

If anyone has been through this issue before, please point me in the right direction. Search for 20" fitment to the new 2016 S8 did not come up with any threads.

Much appreciated. Hope to stick around and discuss once I get the car. The wait is going to be pretty painful. Oh well...

Cheers,
Jay.

If I recall correctly, standard on the 2013 S8 was 20" rims. I don't think the brakes changed. As far as the B&O, I've only heard of two people who didn't like it. Everyone else loves them, particularly in the D4, where speaker placement, as well as material usage and surface shape of the whole interior was designed with that specific system in mind. It may be worth going to the dealer and sitting in an A8 or S8 with the B&O and one without to see if the difference is worth it to you.

In any case, congratulations on your order, it sounds like an excellent color combonation. Good luck!

Thanks for your replies..

Capt - I was under the impression that the D4 would be pretty difficult to spot but in the past 10 days, I have spotted 3 A8Ls and a black S8 in the eastside area. I guess you just start noticing the D4s when you order one.

Hi Jack,

I did try both systems on the D4 platform. The A8L had Bose and the S8 had the B&O system. The B&O system did sound better compared to the BOSE but I couldn't justify the price bump based on the performance. I thought the best sounding system in a car was the Burmester on a S550 which was in a totally different league.

If I am dissatisfied with the BOSE, my plan is to do a custom install. Probably would end up costing the same but I am sure I could get much better performance with better components for the price.

Cheers,
Jay.

Agree, I did start to notice more once I had mine. There certainly are a few out here in the 425/206, but far less D4's than 7 series and S-classes. Then even fewer d4 S8's....you chose well amigo.

Welcome to the PNW A8 gang Capt!

Not wishing to stir conventional wisdome, but think hard about whether you really need those all seasons here in the Seattle area. Sure we get a fair bit of rain, but the ground never really gets all that cold.

I've been running high perf summers on mine for the last couple of years, and not run into any issues. Mind you, I don't use this car as ski transport, so I haven't really challenged it; but for regular driving around Puget Sound 'summers' should be fine.

John

Hi John,

It was me who posted the question about all seasons on the S8. We do use the car year around and frequently drive in snowy/icy conditions in the winter for skiing/roadtrips. We have had prior experience driving a performance sedan (bmw 540i) with summer tires in winter conditions where the car slid off the road. Granted it was a rear wheel drive car with summer tires (worst combo) but since then we have always used high performance all seasons in Seattle. We can sacrifice a bit of performance for family safety and pace of mind.

Cheers,
Jay.

I hear you - confidence in your equipment is important. :-)
And with the wet snow we get in the mountains around here, summer tires just won't cut it.

Two things to think about. If you're on the Eastside, Audi Bellevue do a tire+wheel swap (or at least they used to when it was Barrier Audi), and will store your off season equipment. Not cheap, but an option.

Also think about seeing an independent tire specialist who can give you options on what will fit your rims - not the big chains but someone like 'affordable tire' in Queen Anne, who may have access to a larger range than the brand tied major chains.
