Default Is 70K too many miles for a used A8...

Hello A8 board.

I'm looking at purchasing an A8 and I see some of them have 60K to 70K miles on them.

Is this something to worry about?

When I bought my Q5 it had 40K on it. This is usually my limit when purchasing a pre-owned vehicle, but I know Audi's love to be driven.

So I'm wondering if this is a concern or not.

Any insight and opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Just like any car, the D4s are starting to get up in miles for the earlier years. The D3s seem to have pretty good reliability with exception of a few key items like upper control arm bushings and trunk hinges, not sure how this translates to the D4 era. Do searches on the forum for problem areas and you can probably get a good idea what to expect.

I'd suggest having a kitty for maintenance costs as it was still an $80-100K car when new but many problems will have shown themselves by 70K miles on most cars.

70K miles is just getting broke in! I'm hoping to get to 250,000 to 300,000 miles. And If I can't get there with any major problems I'll never buy another Audi.

Bushings, tires, brakes, wheel bearing are just normal maintenance with any vehicle. That said I had a set of upper arm bushings changed at 45,000 miles. That seems a little premature, but we'll see how long before I have to do that again. Hopefully it will be at more than 150,000 miles again!

I'm at 60,000 and the only thing that's worn out has been brakes, battery, and sway bar links. Everything else has been tip top, still quiet and tight as a drum.

WE have 83k miles on our 3 year old 2012 Audi A8L and its running great! Our 2006 A8L did 180k before it was totaled. I would not hesitate for the higher mileage A8L if I do find one for a good price. Give it a good test drive and make sure no rattles, vibration or hesitation etc and you should be very happy.

I havent replaced the brakes and they are still 3/4 left and just did the front rotors. WE had a bad driveshaft that was replaced last year and its fine now. Otherwise a left rear air suspension went out and we got that replaced. All under the 6year/100k warranty.

The car is smooth, quiet and still solid as new. I do aim to get 200k plus like knapattack.

You have a 6year/100K mile warranty on your A8?

Do you buy up from the 50K warranty?

I just happened to be at the shop getting a set of tires put on my Q5 and mentioned in conversation that I was looking for an A8.

The tech told me they had just got on in. One owner/lease turn in and they hadn't cleaned it out yet.

I told him to let me know when they got back from the detailers and I'd take it for a spin and test everything out.

If it's solid, I'm in.

Hopefully by the end of June I'll be cruising with the seat massage on full blast. :-))

Thanks everyone for the insight.

I wouldnt buy any German car without a good "exclusionary" warranty from a reputable MBI company even if it had low miles on it. If its out of warranty (or approaching) the best extended warranty would obviously be from AUDI itself if you can get it done. An equally good choice would be to go buy an A8 (Or any german car if that's your flavor) at CarMax and assess their exclusionary warranty but typically car max offers very good exclusionary warranties and they dont even mess with the repairs. They wll most likely send it to AUDI for repairs.

I have a 2013 A8L that I bought certified preowned with 54000 miles on it. While I love the understated elegance and luxury of the car, I have had many issues with the car. The car has 69000 miles on it now (I've owned it for 9 months) and it's getting to the point where I'm ready to sell it. I may wait until the 2017 A4 comes out - I think it debuts at a major auto show later this year, so we'll see.
