Default A8 Front license plate-filler grill panel

I will need to mount a front license plate and I can't quite figure out what item I need to do this.
The car I just bought was to have this item---
6W9 FRONT LICENSE PLATE - FILLER GRILLE PANEL
However, upon returning home (bot the car in Houston--and I live in St Louis)--I discovered it wasn't there. However, the Houston dealer has ordered one and is shipping it to me for arrival next week
Is this going to be my solution? (mount the license plate onto it?)---or will I need yet another plate "holder" item (to mount to the filler panel)
I'm not sure exactly what this filler panel even is, frankly

any input appreciated
thanks
Dave

You should have ordered:

Front license plate holder (for states that require front license plates) 6W3

What you will receive is just a backing, that goes between the grill and the license. My guess is you'll probably also need a license plate frame as well, which I'm sure the dealer would be happy to provide for free.

so the item I'm receiving is worthless to me?
(and I should try to get them to not send this item and send the 6W3 instead?

I was thinking the 6W9 plate was going to span the entire grill and then the license plate would mount in the center of that---but not so?

I have an A6 with the front license plate holder (6W3). Basically it's just a flat mounting place for a plate. I pulled my car from dealer stock, and asked when I took delivery, if they would remove it. They said they could, but that the four drill holes would be exposed. Your dealer may need to drill holes and then attach the license plate holder. But I have to confess I'm not certain.

I have a new 2015 A6 on order, and this time I specified that I want it WITHOUT the license holder (my state doesn't require front license plates).

But good luck with your situation.

This is how my car looked coming straight from the dealer.

I didn't like the look so I bought this to cover it up.

I'm not that in love with the massive front chrome grill on the A8--I was hoping this filler plate would be painted black and break up the mass of it---but I think I figured wrong---

Wonder what would? (and the license plate "floating" in the middle of the grill does look stupid IMO)--but I am thinking that is what it will need to be for me?

Mine came off without a hitch. It had three screws and a few clips.
Now I have that big beautiful grill up front.

I was thinking about one of these also should I ever decide to put on a EURO Plate.

6W9 is a 'delete' option on D4, there should be no actual part associated with it.
A8 is not designed to have a filler, it's got 3 options:
  • 6W9 Nothing
  • 6W3 Tag frame
  • Euro tag frame

Exactly. As does the Euro frame.
Euro frame is not orderable through a US dealer.

Then I wish the sales guy who had originally quoted the various options and packages included on the car hadn't included this one---it just confused the whole thing (when I realized I didn't have it once I got home)
no big deal
