A8 or S8 ?

Demographics of board actually sort of interesting here w/ everyone saying S8. Most obvious everyday distinction is all S8's are SWB and most A8's are LWB. Not all, but most out there. Some actually want LWB, though so far about no one here seems to mind. I went empty nester since the D3 A8L W12, but back then LWB was good for family trips, especially before they botched the trunk on D4 rev.

I have 2015 A8l with 4.0t and sport package/differential it is a pleasure to drive and I believe the best of both worlds. My weekend cruiser is a 2015 C7 Z51 which is an absolute beast and tons of fun to drive, it's not getting much use since I picked up the A8l.

My kids love the back seat, and I do myself when they have activities that require me to wait for them in the car. For me the LWB 4.0T with APR would be a perfect compromise. Now when my kids are gone, maybe then I will go for a CPO S8 Plus...

For me, it's the A8L 4.0T with sport/dynamic package (rear sport differential & dynamic steering). Reasons: larger rear cabin, panaramic sunroof, piano black trim vs. stainless (although the copper twill carbon fiber trim in one of the optional interior packages now available for both A/S8 is really nice) and a somewhat less firm tune on the suspension settings.
The A8 4.0T is more than fast enough for me...and I've gotten in enough trouble lately without the benefit of an S8---got pulled over just last week for doing a short 80+mph sprint while clearing out of the HOV lane (truth be told, I didn't even realize how fast I was going). County patrol officer was a nice guy however, and gave me a pass...Possibly he just wanted a closer look at my A8L 🙄

I love my A8L 4.0t! The S8 is amazing as well. I wanted the bigger back seat. While we are now empty nesters as well we always seem to be going somewhere with more than 2 people and the larger backseat is nice. Even with less horsepower than the S8 I've hit the speed limiter (130MPH) a half dozen times without even realizing it. I don't regret not getting the S8 at all. So if you need or want a larger backseat then get he A8L. If you don't then get the S8.

I'm trying to imagine a world where the 4.0t isn't enough? Unless you do track days, don't get many chances to use more than 50% of the performance of either car.
But coming from high-end audio, where the law of diminishing return is evident, I do get the desire...
