After market remote start
#12
I have the exact same setup on my 2013 Audi A8 4.0T Works pretty well for me. Some quirks but the car starts with both the factory key fob and/or the Drone. I only wish I could turn on heat, heater seats, rear defrost, etc. with the Drone.
Rumor has it iDatalink is working on a remote start system just for Audi's. It was in beta testing 3 months ago and I still don't see it on their website so I guess its delayed.

im getting this installed next week
iDatalink - HCX000A
uses factory key to start the car by pressing the lock button on the remote 3 times, can also add compustar drone addon or other 1way or 2way remotes for extended range,
from what i know so far i will loose 1 of the keys as with any German car, but the car will not shutoff when i open the door and i should be able to put it in D and drive off as long as i have 1 of my keys on me....
while its remotely started if anyone breaks in, the car will shutoff as soon as they press on the brake pedal as it will sense there is no key....
the key thats used for installation is basically taken apart and the chip part of it is used just for starting it remotely....
i think its pretty safe as for someone to break into the car and have the time to take panels apart and find where the key is to restart the car is next to nothing unless you leave your car remotely started for long period of time without actually being close or in sight, most people just want to warm up thier car before leaving work or in the morning so ....
now my only issue is i want to use a valet key for this purpose and not 1 of my 2 key fobs
anyone know if the valet key is any cheaper then regular key from the dealer and is there an alternative source ?
im also in search for a plug-n-play harness for this install i believe there is a company that makes one im waiting on their response will keep you guys posted.

You mean this one?
It says "NEW iDataStart VW2 is the industry’s first complete remote start solution designed for select Volkswagen and Audi models 2006 and up."
But doesn't list the A8.

Winter is here - I live in Wisconsin - It's COLD - and we dont have Aux. heaters in our a8's.
Just thought i would bring up this subject again for discussion sense this is a 2 year old post.

Here's what I've learned:
1. I spoke with sales at iDatalink to get the low-down. Not the friendliest bunch but got what we needed, i.e. we need the AU2 wiring harness. The website is confusing with all the packages but he said that this harness is the solution for a 2015 Audi S8 (presumably for all D4 A8/S8)
2. He also gave me the name of my local rep/installer (they won't ship it to you directly and they "require" a certified installer to do the work)
3. I called my local installer and he filled me in (much friendlier):
a. Out-the-door cost is $579 + tax
b. Takes about four hours
c. Does not void warranty
d. Includes an aftermarket keyfob with 1-mile range
e. We can use the OEM keyfob as well but the range isn't good
f. Both OEM and AM keyfobs can be used simultaneously
4. I'm getting it installed on Wednesday and will update everyone on performance.
I've inquired about a CarPlay upgrade while he's in there so he's going to check with this vendors and call me back. LMK if anyone has other questions and I'll hit him up. I also have his email.

Update on iDatalink install. Had it done this morning . Dropped her off at 8am and she was done by noon. Works as expected. Installer needed both key fobs for the install but no key fobs have to be installed into the dash. With OE fobs, three clicks of the lock button and the car starts. Do it again, it stops. After a remote start, the car shuts down in 25 minutes if there's no activity. The package ncludes a new extended range fob - I haven't tested the range yet but they say a mile (not sure why I'd ever need that). Only quirky thing is that the signal lights blink while it's running after autostart (at least until I start driving it). Pumped to start using it this winter - a game changer for me! Oh, and after an auto-start, there are no special steps to take. I hop in the car and go.
While in the spirit of aftermarket electronics, I've also procured the following (should receive both early next week with subsequent install).
Apple CarPlay retrofit for D4 A8/S8. Should work just like the OE-equipped models. What put me over the hump on this feature is that CarPlay now allows the use of Waze, which I use religiously. I tried out Waze (with the new iOS upgrade) in my wife's 2018 A5 cab and love it! I was sold.

Next, with APR stage 1, I'd like the ability to monitor my boost and oil temp (among other things). I picked up the following and will install it in the vent to the left of the steering wheel. I spoke to the guys at P3 Gauges and they are going to customize this bad-boy to fit my S8.
VW MK6 - OBD2 Multi-Gauge - P3 Cars
I have a few things to sort out/test on this little toy based on what Jake at P3 told me. Here's an excerpt from his email (in response to a few questions I had). BTW - I went forward with the Track Pack but forewent the analog boost sensor until I figure out if it's necessary or not. I have an email into APR but no response.
Hey David,
Track pack adds additional acceleration and braking timers as well asAir/Fuel ratio through the OBD2 port. We call it track pack but many people who never track their cars get it and love the features. It is just personal preference.
The analog sensor is for cars that are heavily modified or runpiggy back tunes. Typically a car with stock turbos will read boost fine through the OBD2 port but in certain situations that is not the case. For example, the Mk7 VW Golf's stock MAP sensor can only read boost up to 22.5 PSI our gauge reads from that sensor so any tune that takes the boost over 22.5 PSI our gauge cannot read. The solution is our analog boostsensor. I would say that unless your car is heavily modified or has a piggyback tune you will be fine to skip the analog boost sensor. If you ever decide in the future that you want an 800hp monster S8 with big turbos you can add the sensor at any time in the future haha.
As far as customization goes, we typically get it close to the final shape with a pair of side cuts or something similar and then you can take it to the final shape with a file or sandpaper. I would recommend a file to get a nice square edge.
I'll let everyone know how everything performs within the next couple of weeks. Happy Thanksgiving to those celebrating it! To everyone else, well - have a great weekend!
Merry Christmas to me!!!
