You know, the highest tread rating I have seen on a 255/40/20 tires is 500 on the P7's. If you go to a 255/45/19 P7 Plus gets you a 700 tread rating. The Michelin Pilot Sport A/S N-spec would be my choice on the 20" wheel. At least it has a 440 UTQG. The Extreme Conacts have good ratings but I'm sure they will wear fast with a 340 UTQG.

Yeah, I'm cheap. I try to spend the least amount as possible but still maintain quality. Does not always work out though... lol

you arent really having bad luck...those tires you chose are not that good of tires if you go read reviews on tirerack...i would only go with tires that are at least 4.5 star rated on tirerack unless you are going with something more specialized like track only type of tires.

try the conti extreme contact dws 06s that everyone is recommending here or anything else they are recommending. those are all highly recommended on tirerack too.
I Looked at the DWS extreme contacts on TR. TBH they didnt get good reviews from everyone. I undertsand these can be a hit or miss. I have given up on conti's because the manufacturer was reluctant to listen to my woes with their previous tire. But thanks for the feedback on them

Did you look at the DWS's, or the DWS-06's? Different tire models. The earlier were incrementally more geared to winter but known as a bit sloppy performance wise, while the 06's swung back to the performance side some. Michelin had sort of the opposite conundrum, tweaking the AS3 to the 3+ in adding somewhat better winter performance than the mediocre that it had before. Had a set of the pre change ones on the D3 W12, and had the same experience. On D4, honestly have a somewhat hard time telling DW (summer) apart from DWS-06 in everyday use, and DWS-06 made the grade for me as a transitional snow tire. Will cut back to DW's in next month or so and see if I feel the difference going the other way.

For summers, still guessing Michein PS4S in 275/40-20 will make it here. In Europe already. TR typically says nothing about new tires until when they show up, presumably to manage inventory. Michein USA site not listing it so far either, but it is in Europe. But I have a few more seasons on both the DWS-06's and DW's to reassess.

Reading your replies BTW, for what it's worth I wonder if you have some suspension component wear issue. Is it showing a need for alignment when you bring it in even in absence of obvious hard hits in everyday use? I find sometimes alignments essentially just build in a wear issue but don't wring out underlying problem.

I think your issue is with combination of your suspension alignment and the fact you are using performance tires with low tread life. I get on average 35-40k miles on my 2012 Audi A8L with both 19 and 20 inch rims. Never had issues with rapid wear as long as I am maintaining the tire pressure. Also I DONT rotate. No need to on a quattro. My tires all wear pretty good. When you get the alignment done tell them to not do aggressive toe in for the front and rear tires and have good camber setting to allow for even wear. Then look at the numbers on the sheet and you can learn from what they have done and how your tires wear and last. If your alignment specs are set too aggressively within the extreme end of the alignment spec set by Audi then your tires will wear faster.

Also like the others are saying you should go with higher quality brands and tires such as Michelin or Bridgestone and get a better rated tire with longer lasting tread.

Tire Rack is your friend. If you haven't called and talked to them I suggest you do. I've had excellent help from Damon at Tire Rack giving advice on tires for pickup trucks to my S8 and 911.

Got the Michelin Pilot Sport AS Plus N-spec 255/40R20 on my A8L with road force balancing and all 4 of them are excellent and I have broken them in nicely and they are very comfortable tires, quiet, and smooth at all speeds. I like them alot more than the AS3 tires which were a bit firm because of the Y-rated spec vs the V-rated spec of these tires. I recommend these tires as a replacement for the 265/40R20 tires as they are more in line with the speedo and the MPG is very good. 275/40R20 is another alternative but I dont want wide tires as they can drop the MPG on this car which is a bit sensitive in my experience.
