You can quite easy test if its the trim or something else, just put one of your offending bass tracks on and make sure the car goes "brap brap brap" get in the back seat and put your hand on the speaker trim and apply a bit of pressure. If it stops the "brap" then you know its the trim, if not its something else.
I just took a 4 mm tie wrap and pried it in, its around 1mm thick and 4 mm wide.

You know what's funny? I am an engineer. I have a reputation for being one who can easily decipher problems through root cause analysis. I am extremely confident in my skills, yet the whole idea of turning the stereo on to test the speaker completely eluded me.

Well, I checked it out and no matter how I press or manipulate on the trim or speaker grille, the distortion is still present. I have some tracks that produce the effect even when bass is set at the factory default of 5. Time to fight with the dealer, I reckon!
