I think someone should make a simple aluminum red ring surround for the start stop button. I noticed the S8 has this and now want it! I know I can replace the entire button but it seems like a pain and requires a bit of shaving of some plastic on the inner workings.

It doesn't look like a pain at all. It looks like you just take off the surrounding piano black trim and pull the button out. From there, I'd tape it carefully and paint the edges red. Or replace it with the S8 start button, but that cost $95 plus shipping new. It's the same piano black insert in both the S8 and A8, so the button shouldn't necessitate any modification.

The trim is snapped into place, you start at the bit closest to the armrest and work forward from there, popping it out as evenly as possible to avoid bending, and do the same putting it back in.

I'm sure there is some slight difference that will cause problems installing it. Again, stuuuuupid mod. But as you all know by now, boooooooooored.

The two buttons actually share the same base part number, with only an A or B to differentiate between them. As far as I can see, the two are identical, except for the visible portion. And why should they be different? Even for Germans, that'd be too much.

Here's hoping but remember, it's the Germans, nothing is simple in these cars. Wish they had a pedalbox for the A8 D4. I miss mine.
