The logical next question for this forum is "What about the A8/A8L?" Well, AudiUSAParts.com just told me that, effective Feb. 20, 2012, LED license plate light assemblies are available from Audi for the A8/A8L. The part numbers are:
4H0943021 (Left side)
4H0943022 (Right side)
They're $18.44 each.
Note that the A6 has one part number for both lights so they're the same. The A8/A8L's are specific to each side.
It'll be interesting to see if mine comes with LEDs when it arrives in mid-April. If not, this is an inexpensive upgrade!

I can confirm that these actually do work as replacements. I came here thought to warn everyone in wintery climates to check the contacts of the housing and on the car for corrosion! I'm at 80-85k miles and did the LED upgrade about half a year ago and they recently stopped working because of the corrosion. Make it a routine preventative maintenance thing to clean them with contact cleaner so it doesn't get too bad

I did this mod on my 2014 S8 and very happy with the outcome. No bulb out warning. Both the original halogen and the new LEDs get very hot during operation. Here are the bulbs I used from eBay:
36mm CANBUS Error Free 3-SMD 5050 LED License Plate Dome Light Bulbs 6418
Based on my experience with the license plate lights on my D3 S8 the original factory lens seals better than the replacement ones which key to keep moisture out.

Thanks for the heads-up - they will work though, we will add it to the list and a photo of the OEM, if your housing looks like that it will work.

The ones from the A4 work great in the A8. Check this thread from several years ago for part numbers, etc.

But you can adjust the brightness and it is perfect.
We never had any complaints from our customers though, only great feedback on this model, all LEDs are different, what goes inside is the most important, we feel we have bright LEDs but not as bright as competitors, a little bit lower key in many cases while being bright.
