It's about the aesthetics for me
I was referencing the original red or blue grommeted AMI cable with an Apple 30 pin to lightning adapter. Not much more stuff than the lightning AMI cable with the same function (assuming no video). No cig lighter adapter necessary. Most already have the 30 pin AMI cable and the adapter is $29, much less than the cost of the Lightning AMI cable.

A bit of a kludge in my mind to have an adapter attached to a cable...

I spent $110,000 on the vehicle, an $80 cable certainly won't break the bank

Edit: Just remembered I forgot to test the cable yesterday

I was responding to your comment of a cig lighter adapter and a cable. Not sure why you would be using this if you have an iDevice. Any current AMI cable provides power as well as data.

The 30 pin AMI cable that came with the car doesn't work natively with an iPhone 5s (or any Apple device with a Lightning connector), so I had a cigarette lighter USB adapter and cable previously.
Edit: It makes no sense to me to buy an adapter that's almost half the cost of the correct cable and uses obsolete tech

Now I'll only have to use that for charging my vape on extended road trips.

Jake, I've been using the Red cable with Apples 30pin-Lightning connector. After a software upgrade to my MMI to support it, all works well on using an older iPhone 5.
However on my iPhone 6 Plus you just cannot control music from the car. Everything else works, playlists, DIS display, album art etc. I now use the iPhone 6 on HFP for calls and my iPhone 5 docked for music in the car. As a bonus I have a free 'load-jack' using iCloud 'Find my iPhone'.

Great to know... honestly testing the cable hasn't been a priority for me and only just made it into the vehicle at the weekend.

I think I know what to do with my iPhone 5s now

I just tried the new AMI to Lightning connector in my '11 UK Spec A8L.
It's no better than my existing setup with an iPhone 5 on AMI Red Cable with Apple Lightning Adapter, in fact it's worse.
No album art, not even on an iPhone 5. Still no music control from the car on iPhone 6.
I was told there are multiple variants of this newer AMI-Lightning cable, the one I tested was not for an A8 or iPhone 5. I'm not convinced. Any thoughts?

Why am I not surprised ? <bangs head on desk>

I'm probably one of the, if not the, last people who should comment on the functionality.
My MMI is pretty much set to one channel on Sirius or I listen to Sinatra from the jukebox.
Really just got this to make for a cleaner charging method

This is the one I have:
