Painting calipers is fine, I hate the painted metal things people put over them rather than painting them. If you do it, it's all in the prep. Feel free to peruse the internet for how to videos, there are many.

yeah, they make caliper covers but I doubt they look "right"

They don't. With anything but the most casual glance, they look cheap.
