If accurate, I'd speculate that Audi now has to prove that all their other diesel variants do not have the culprit software---even though they have the "Bluetech" technology, which the flagged smaller 4-banger diesels do not have.

didn't Audi license "bluetech" from Mercedes?

Yup, as suspected, the 3.0 V6 TDI engine used in the A6, A7 and A8, as well as Q5 diesel models is now under scrutiny. Who knows, they may have to prove that even the non-diesel gasoline engine models don't have the clean air emissions defeating software. Oh boy!
From yesterday's Motor Authority:
..."Now the EPA is going to take a closer look at the automaker's 3.0-liter V-6 diesel, which is an engine found in plenty of Audi offerings and some Porsches as well.
The 3.0-liter engine has already been certified by the EPA for the 2016 model year. That certification, however, came before the agency knew what they do about the 2.0-liter. This means there will be a much closer look of the 3.0-liter being undertaken. It's an incredibly important engine to Audi, as it is currently offered in the Q5, A6, A7 and the A8. Additionally, Porsche offers a TDI variant of the Cayenne with this engine here in the U.S., and the Panamera also offers it overseas.
We don't know yet if the 3.0-liter utilized the same software as the 2.0-liter. That engine is currently not being certified for the 2016 model year until Volkswagen can demonstrate that it properly meets U.S. emissions standards."

From what I just found on Wikipedia, yes Audi initially did. But that agreement was apparently ended by Audi for marketing reasons...
"Daimler AG has entered into an agreement with Volkswagen and Audi to share BlueTEC technology with them in order to increase the Diesel passenger-vehicle market in the United States.[1] VW introduced the Jetta Clean TDI, the Tiguan concept, and the Touareg BlueTDI as part of the BlueTec licensing program. The Jetta and the Tiguan use NOx adsorbers, while the Touareg uses a Selective Catalytic Reduction catalytic converter.[citation needed]
In August 2007 VW Group announced that cooperation on BlueTEC with Daimler AG would end. The reasoning for this change is due to the recognition of the VW TDI branding. VW did not want to use a competitor's branding for a product they would introduce into the market."

Not surprisingly, all the 'Clean Diesel' apparel and merchandise seems to have bern removed from Audi's USA web shop.
But someone at VW has a sense of humor because there's one 'diesel' item left on their site:
VW10 | Das Diesel Dog

Newest NYT article
Explains historical context, prior BlueTec path, technically what was found, and circumstances of prior recall.
The Sergeant Schultz defense that Winterkorn asserted is toward the end also continues to amaze me. Nice juxtaposed picture on the other hand of him literally staring under a Porsche down on the floor art a trade show. The stereotype VW/Audi arrogance behind the scenes is going to cost some serious money here.
Meantime, also unfortunate in that I was hoping Audi might see a clear opening for a high powered TDI in the US for the D5 like the V8 offerings. But they'll have their hands full now, even if the bigger motors are typically the urea based NOx control systems.
