It's almost impossible to get anything from your own insurance company for diminished value when it's your fault. It's very easy when it's someone else's fault and you are settling with their insurance company. I speak from experience.

There should be no difference to how the car drives once once reassembled and properly aligned.
Thanks for the additional info.

I was at the dealership this morning for my son-in-law to take delivery on a Q5. Checked with the shop and they hope to have the tank by a week from Monday. They wouldn't confirm where it was coming from, but having to wait a week and a half tells me it has to come from Germany.

I'll just be glad to get it back.

The same thing happened to me, but fortunately I was driving my Lexus ISF. Hit a full truck tread at 90 degrees at about 70mph. All four wheels left the ground, but maintained control. $4,800 in damage. Big difference in the frame structure of an ISF and our S/A8s. Glad the damage was "limited," and that you are OK.

Not for the faint of heart. Stopped by the dealer today to check on the progress of replacing the fuel tank on my '15 S8. Mechanic said should be done by Wednesday, if the one additional part he needs arrives in the morning.

I know how you feel when they start taking your car apart. It can be unnerving. I've had two related incidents. The first was my wife's 2002 allroad out of warranty by 5 years and the fuel filler pipe weld developed a crack at the gas tank. I was told $5500 because they are not permitted to reweld to the gas tank so we needed a new one. I complained to AOA that a weld like that shouldn't have happened and finally got them to pay for all except $400.

The second incident related to having your car taken apart and repaired (for over $9K) happened to my 2013 A6 last month as detailed at some length with photos here:

If you read the whole "blog" you'll see I was very pleased by the end result. Still, it was a nerve wracking experience all around.

Hey Red, did they finish your car? I know you are bothered by the disassembly but all that stuff will go back together nicely. Just wait and see...

They called this afternoon to say that they were putting gas in it so the tech could take it for a test drive. If everything seemed OK they were going to do the alignment Monday and it should be ready Monday afternoon.

I am anxious to get it back.

Punctured the tank and fuel lines on my '09 A8 (will teach me not to park on a field with rocks and tree stumps at night!). I had that same sinking feeling when they told me what would be involved in replacing the lines and the tank. Picked it up after about 10 days and it was a good as new.

Got it back from the dealer this afternoon and took a short drive. All seems fine, but it sure took a long time.
