Default Winter Rubber

Time for a new set of winter tires. 2012 A8 running 255/45/19 wheels. TireRack site says they offer no winter tires in that size, a wonder!

I have had very good results through three A8 series with Pirelli Sottozero rubber. I am located in Northern Minnesota/Northwestern Ontario, very cold weather performance is important.

Any recommendations?

Are those of us that encounter nasty conditions in aged vehicles in the midwest cast a drift?

Maybe there is a California social fix out there I am missing?

Most of the big Tyre companies (Tire Rack, Sears, Costco, Discount tire etc.,) tend to want to give you tyres that are exactly the same size as the OEM set - try talking to a smaller tyre specialist and give them the size of your rims and ask what they'd recommend and be able to fit. May be slightly different than the exact OEM size, but widen the range of options that you have.

I think the 19' wheels have a 9' rim, so well worth looking to see what would fit a 19x9 wheel rather than the exact 255/45/19 tire that's already on it. I'd also verify your rim size before purchasing anything :-)

If you have a Nokian dealer anywhere near you, I'd call them and ask what they can get you. Best winter tyres around IMO. Others love Bridgstone Blizzaks, which may have somewhat more dealers in the US.

If you're gong to do serious driving in snow (not just super cold roads), I think it's worth getting a set of winter wheels as well - tire companies often sell them as bundles. Getting a slightly narrower wheel will increase your options for tires and is a bit better for driving in snow, plus you can save your nice shiny alloys for showing off in the summer.

If you go to tirerack and ask for tire / wheel packages you get this....

http://www.tirerack.com/snow/preferredpackages.jsp

looks like these might fit on your wheels.

I've had excellent results taking with Damon at Tire Rack. Call their toll free number work through the phone tree until you can ask for him by name. Talk to him personally and he will give you all the info you need, I sure.
