Default Check engine light on 1995 A6 2.8 non-quattro

Hi,

I have this check engine light on right now and i dont really know how to go about checking it. I have a obd2 scanner but the car doesnt have a hookup even though the manual says it should. Whats the cheapest route to check what it is? I looked at vag-com and $250 is steep for me.

Thanks so much!

You don't have an OBD-2 port in your center console area? I have a 97 and that's where mine is..

No, mine is in a depression right on top of the console next to the e-brake handle and behind the cigarette lighter. It is below a plastic cover that pops up. There is no cloth to remove. See this:

Could also be that you don't have OBD-2. I'm reading some conflicting info about it. Could be this "2x2" connector referenced here:

My 95 is OBD1 not sure if all 95 is that way but I believe so. Not sure if any aftermarket would be successful at reading codes. Blink codes works but annoying.

Wasn't sure if 95 was OBD1 or II, but you are right- a scanner/reader doesn't work for OBD1... at least the one I have doesn't.
