Ok, no more sunlight today so I'll get into it tomorrow. I was confusing the (30) you mentioned as a fuse 30amp. My concern is that the engine control module is the problem, not the trans module. According to the scanner that was used, the engine control module had 0 voltage and a bunch of wacky readings for vehicle speed and engine coolant temp. When I check for voltage, can I probe the connector while it's disconnected?

Yes, you can check voltage on the pin slots from the connector once it is unplugged..check the grounds too. Be careful and don't damage the slots.

The engine ECU can have a problem if the car was ever submerged or very wet (think of the Sandy hurricane cars that were swamped) The constant 12v plug connectors on the ECU are on the bottom at the lowest point, and can get wet. If you see signs or water damage around the bottom of the compartment that holds the ECU..you could have a corroded connector there..but I doubt that is your transmission problem. When you take the connectors off the engine ECU..look inside the plugs for stains or water damage. Connector B terminal #10 will be cooked if it got wet..as it has constant 12v feed from the battery (30) and dissolves the pin connector with water over time. I doubt that is the transmission problem..but check it anyways. The transmission ECU is up higher and should not have gotten wet.

The nomenclature for most German cars is 30 is battery constant 12v..15 is switched 12v from the the ignition.

If the engine control module is having a voltage problem..then you should have a readiness error in your scan..low voltage error code and even the "check engine" light might be on.

When you do the scan..post the error codes..do a complete scan. Try and use the VW/Audi scan compatible scanner..rather than a simple OBC2 scanner from a parts store. You will get more information and avoid lots of wasted time. About $40 from Amazon for the model VAG405. The VAG405 should be fine for our older Audi cars. See the link above.

Thank you for all the info above, I have the vag505 but when I do the scan nothing comes up. It will scan the engine but when it comes to the transmission, the scanner just goes on to the next. No codes at this time but the car is still acting up.

Also, as for the connectors, they all look clean and intact. I carefully opened the engine ECU, and there were no signs of corrosion or excessive heat. My multimeter's 9v is dead so I have to run to the store to grab one and I'll check the pins you mentioned

Scanner may not be reading the transmission ECU because it is not powered up with 12v..good to check.

Set vag505 to autoscan all systems and it will not scan (step 2-auto trans) I will check power at the connector again but first I have to get back under the carpet. Will update.

I removed the panel under the steering column and found a mess of wires and relays. I couldn't find any info on my searches for any images or diagrams of what is what... I appreciate all the help thus far.

The power for your transmission should be in the cluster of red wires under the fuse box..There are two 12v battery (30) terminals I can see on the left.

There should be a small red wire in there..it goes to pin #26 on the transmission ECU 12v all the time..and check your ignition switch too.
