Default Exhaust manifold gasket question

I needed to remove my manifold right side and need to replace the gasket. The old and new gasket hang on the center bottom stud because the lower heat shield blocks it. I was hoping not to remove the lower heat shield because it looks like its held in place by the 8mm engine mounts. Am I missing something here or is there an easier way. Can the gasket be notched or the bolt hole elongated to allow it the slide on with out removing the heat shield?

Thanks,

Marc..don't know what model you have ...but..don't notch the exhaust gaskets..you will have to pull the heat shield..pretty typical Audi maintenance..seems like there is always something in the way or needing to be removed to do a simple repair.

I didn't think it would be a good idea. I needed to pull the lower heat shield off which oddly enough is held in place by two 8mm engine mount bolts. Worked like a champ.
