Default Removing the engine oil filter 12v

I have a leak between the (cheap) filter and the heat exchanger, about 4 drops per minute, engine not running. I tightened it a little but it didn't help, so I need to pull it off to see what's up, and put a good one on while I'm at it. (I double-checked... the oil is NOT coming from behind the heat exchanger, which I understand is a common issue.)

Q: Do I need to drain the sump before removing it? I ask because the filter appears to be mounted pretty low on the engine and my service manual won't arrive for about a week.

Regards... Mike

Scratch that, I found the answer. The drip stopped after the filter only was emptied.

...and so, the answer is: No, the sump does not need to be drained first.
