More likely the shop will not clean it because (a) they make money selling the part and (b) there is vastly more potential for trouble between you and the repair shop if it were to simply clean it. Replacing it is the only sensible behavior for the repair shop when all the negatives are considered.

But DIY, the financial equation is altogether different. Take it out and clean it, and if the cleaning doesn't take, then it will take you half as long to take it out a second time.
