1987 Audi Coupe GT 1.8i engine transplant options
Hi everyone,
I own a 1987 audi coupe gt with 4 cylinder 1.8 engine, however it's lost compression and it's suspected that the piston rings have gone. I am looking at getting it rebuilt or considering an engine transplant and was wondering if anyone knew what engines would be a relatively straight forward swap if I were to go with a different engine than it already has, and if anyone has swapped their 1.8 out for another engine and what they did.
Any help will be much appreciated.
Thanks

Resurrecting this old thread as I have the same question. Considering an ‘87 FWD (bummer) and 4-cylinder (strike 2, I know) but it has low mileage and from the pics looks pretty darn clean. Most of the swap threads I see assume a longitudinally mounted starting point. If the engine is sitting the wrong way, I’m, assuming it’s still possible to swap in a 5-cylinder but would need to add the transmission as well. Is it more complicated than that or is there a big difference in the mounting points from the factory for everything?
Thanks in advance for any guidance!

All Audis were longitudinally-mounted, so you can swap any engine you like that has been done on the 4000 or Coupe GT (which includes 1.8T, 10vt, 20vt, V6, and V8). Both the 4000 and CGT came in FWD versions with a 4-cylinder or 5-cylinder so you need only find the appropriate donor vehicle and swap the parts you need.

everything is possible; is it worst it?? You have to answer that question. As for the swap, engine, trans, chassis, electric, cooling and many more little things that will drive you nuts. Good luck and keep us posted.

LOL crazy. Well, if it's got 4 cylinders and it's an 87 then it's FWD. If it's a US Coupe GT it's FWD. They only got the quattro version in other countries. Closest we got was the ur-Quattro but the body is a bit different and it has a turbo 5-cylinder.
They did a good job on the FWD cars though. Despite the entire engine being in front of the wheels they still handle well.

I took a closer look at the photos and in one can see the fuel distributor and snorkel and it seems to match up with the 5-cylinder....which is a HUGE bonus to me...I don't care which variant..I just need that sound in my life. My sis had a 5000 turbo in high school (30 years ago) and have regretted not finding a way to get my hands on it ever since.
I've owned an '85 Scirocco, and an A2 16-valve GTI so glad to hear they were able to make this work too from a handling perspective.
Thanks VERY much for the intel, Rog. I see you all over the engine swap threads so appreciate the solid information.

Dave, I also owned an '85 Scirocco--the car that first made me pine for the Coupe GT. While good little cars, I don't feel I need another Scirocco but I'll always have my Coupe.
