Dreaded oil cooler "O" ring failure
Got a call from my 18 year old son this morning, on his way to work the audi was making a "funny" noise so he stopped and checked the oil and it was down after only 15 miles!
I took a tow rope, the wife and a recovery vehicle and went to town. When I arrived the car was down 1/2 qt.(son had added about 2qt) and so I started it to see if I could hear anything out of the ordinary. Sounded ok so I let it run wondering where the oil had gone... then I saw oil pouring out from around the oil filter tho the filter was secure. Am I right in suspecting the oil cooler O ring? How long does it take to change? Any tips? Sure hope there wasn't any internal damage tho the buzzer never sounded! Looks like I'll be in the garage this week.

I second that. It's easy to do.
Buy the o-ring, drain the oil, unscrew the filter and remove the big nut under the filter. The oil cooler should come off and you'll see the o-ring as clear as day. Just make sure you tighten the big nut all the way when reattaching the oil cooler. I had to use a set of tongue and groove pliers to get a good grip on that sucker.
See picture for a diagram of the seal you'll be replacing. Good luck.

Well I took it off and the gasket was hard and compressed( and 16 yrs old) I had read that a filter gasket would do so I pulled one out and it seemed a slightly larger diameter so i'll wait till tomorrow and get the right one from the dealer (anyone know the part number?). The Bentley manual suggests that I coat the surface with AMV 188 100-02! Anyone know what that is? Would permatex do? Thanks for all the help!

Mine broke too. Unfortunately, I needed a new engine. Shame on me. My dad changed the one in mom's car post haste after it happened to me. We aren't the only ones that should have this issue either. Just about any modern VW/Audi uses these coolers. I'm going to start changing mine every 100k miles to be safe.
