Default Are Euro headlights illegal to use in the U.S.?

And if they are, is it a State to State thing? Has anyone here ever been stopped/ticketed for using their expensive upgrade?

Default Here's my take...

...street legal? No. Will you get busted? Probably not. Only the most **** of cops will actually look for a "D.O.T." stamp on the glass. One could draw the conclusion that if the pathetic stock lights can pass the D.O.T's standards, the euro's should have no problem. Of course, in order to legally cover their proverbial asses, dealers state that "these lights are for off-road use only."

Default Anyone tried just ordering some from a salvage yard in Europe?

I have been doing some digging and inquring to see if this is a viable alterative. Anyone have a part # for the lights I would need to upgrade my 1984 4000Q? I think that is my biggest brick wall right now.

Default Re: Here's my take...Max is right and a handful of laypeople know the difference...

...now looking for euro headlights, search ebay always a set there, Force5Auto had some nice sloped euro's (85-up 4000 set up). If your looking for the flat grill set up (84 and under) Mike Desi on the Urquattro page still has a set (I think).

Default How many cops are German car freaks????

I doubt any are and would be on the look out for euro lights. They all drive Fords and Chebbys. It's interesting that the newer DOT headlights are starting to have cutoffs like the euro lights. My A4 is that way.

Default Well...

It's nice and new and all that, but...

It's a little too quiet and "soft" compared to my 4ks and 944. It's a good cruising car (except for the miniscule backseat). I'd get an A6 next time. I don't like the pedal spacing. Not condusive to heel-toe. The drive-by-wire really stinks. Makes downshifting even harder.

I guess that's the way new cars are going. I suppose if I never had an 80's model car, I wouldn't know the difference and would think the A4 is the best thing since sliced bread. It's all in what you're used to.
