They probably changed the axle to convert it to discs... Do you mean the lug pattern is different? If so, I bet the rear is 4x100, since it's pretty hard to find 4x108 rear discs for a FWD (been looking for months myself).
So that's interesting.
If that's the case though, it'll be easy to find new hubs. Any higher-end VW will have them from the late 80s through the 90s. The hubs are easy to change as well, no press needed like the fronts.

You'll have to try to get a part number off the rear hubs if you can, as they could have come off of several different VWs. I'm afraid you're stuck with the mismatched lug patterns unless you wanted to track down the correct rears, either go back to drums or try to find 4x108 discs.
Really strange that someone would do that...
Front hubs will not work in the rear since it's FWD and they use a different type of bearing (fronts are pressed on).

There are a few options
Probably the rears that you have are from a Fwd 90. That is a common donor for rear discs. You could change the front hubs to 4x108 14 mm that would be the same hubs as the 4000Q. You could get the rotors you have on the back drilled & tapped to 4x100 12 mm. or you could replace the rear assemblys with those from a 16v GLI or GTI they should fit on your axle spindles, The rotors are a little strange, the bearing presses into the disc. You will need to change the calipers & brackets too if you go this route.

We might be getting a little confused here, especially with multiple threads...
Can we start with what year your CGT is? Up through '84 they were 4x100 stock. Then they went 4x108 in '85. So if the rears don't match the fronts it could be a couple different things that were done, depending in the year.
I would be very surprised if someone was able to source 4x108 rear discs easier than they could get the correct 4x100 ones if that's what the car started with (been searching for months for a 4x108 FWD rear disc setup). So I was assuming it started 4x108 and someone put 4x100 rear discs on since they're much, much easier to find. But you should measure or give some more info so we're all clear.
