Default New Owner: 200 20v avant

I just picked up a 20v avant in poor shape. I have gone through the entire intake system and cleaned/ replaced parts and now, with a new diverter valve, it runs really good with tons of power, even at 300k. My problem now is the infamous hydraulic system... The car leaks so bad that when the catalytic converters begin to heat up, the leaked fluid smokes way to much to even drive, or breathe near the car for that matter. I drained the system and took it for a drive and not having power brakes or steering isnt as bad as I thought (my track car, e30, didnt have power steering last season). I dont want to eliminate the system but it seems extremely difficult and expensive to diagnose.

The leak seems to originate directly under the reservoir but the entire system is damp with fluid except the pump. The pump and lines to and from the pump do NOT leak. Is there a common place these systems like to leak from? It seems like the high pressure line to the rack is where its coming from and just running down all the other lines making it seem like everything is leaking.

If my rack is leaking, is there even a way to take it out and inspect it without pulling the engine? Thanks guys for all the other help with my 4000cs as well.

Here it is:

I would try to clean things off enough to try and trace the leak. You can try using a different p/s fluid instead of the costly factory pentosin 11s. Redline power steering fluid works great in these cars even mobil one synthetic atf works.

The rack comes out the passenger side tie-rod opening in the wheel well after disconnecting the tie-rods column joint and hoses.

You certainly don't want to run without the power brakes you'll have almost zero braking ability so if you are considering running the rack dry I would suggest a vacuum brake booster conversion.

Common for the supply line on the bottom of the reservoir to age/shrink so that the OEM clamp doesn't work. Some have removed the hose, snipped an inch off the end and reinstalled with a new clamp.

Thanks for the help guys. Those links seem to have ample amounts of info! I started the cleaning process and the leak seems to be above the brake bomb, so I guess thats a good start. I am relieved to hear that the rack can be taken out the passenger side wheel well too. Thanks again.
