Default 90 quattro 20v blend door help!!

I took the car to a shop, the guy was cool checked it out did a full flush and checked all my hoses. He thinks eveything is in order, maybe the temperature sensor is malfunctioning, but he says its most likely the blend door. I have no idea where it is located and he wants to charge me $1000 to fix it. The car drives great, it has 150,000 miles..its getting a bit colder in chicago and I need to get this resolved any help would be appreciated?

why dont you describe what are the symptoms?
the heat is not coming into the cabin?
maybe he was talking about the flaps?

I have this issue, too, on my 1989 90. Both coolant lines going into and out of the core are warm, so it's probably either the mechanism that controls the blend door is not working or the blend door itself is non-responsive. Either way the dash must come out.

When the foam comes off the blend doors/flappers they cannot direct the flow of air correctly. Unfortunately the dash comes out, disassemble the heater box and reseal the flappers with hi-temp HVAC tape. Might as well install a new heater core too, while you are there. I did this on mine..made a huge improvement in the HVAC.

Air comes in, just cold, the mechanic thinks it's most likely the flaps. But I'd like to switch everything out since the dash will be out.

If you know someone in the Chicago area who can help me out with a cheaper price I'd be willing to negotiate. And thank you..
