Default '91 CQ power window buttons stay dimly lit even after car locked

I've noticed that my '91 CQ's three power window buttons stay dimly lit even after the engine has been turned off, power windows power relay clicked off, key pulled and even after the car is locked.

The windows otherwise operate normally.

I changed the power window timer relay without success. Any other thoughts?

Thanks.

try the relay that's responsible for the "soft" light feature

Here is an update on my '91 coupe window switch light always being on. The red-blue wire at the window switch gets 12V with ignition on. With ignition off, regardless of key out, door locked etc, the window switch always gets 9V to illuminate the power window switch and drain the battery. Is this normal? Shouldn't this be zero volts with the car locked?

Also, pin 30 of the window relay always gets 12V.

I've swapped the power window relay 286, interior light timer 320 and ignition switch temporarily without being able to drop the red-blue wire voltage to zero.

Just to make life interesting..it looks like Audi used a blue/red and a red/blue wire on the window switches. To tell the difference the first color would be a bold stripe.

The RED/blue should be 12v power all the time.

The BLUE/red looks (I can't tell exactly) like it grounds through the switches..maybe for illumination.

I would suspect you may have a bad window switch. Try disconnecting one then the other..sorry I can't help more.

Thank you for the help. I have RED-blue wire on my window switches. There is no BLUE-red. The RED-blue appears to supply the switch illumination only and goes to 12V when car is running.

The RED-blue is 9V whenever the engine is off, whether the ignition is on, off, car locked or whatever, it doesn't make a difference. Could this be my ignition switch?

Update #2: the Coupe power windows only work when the motor is running. If the ignition is on but the motor is off, switch is illuminated but power windows do not work.

I did a quick swap of the ignition socket onto a new ignition switch and this did not fix the issue.

Any thoughts now?

Thank you.

I don't have a wiring diagram for your car..so my best guess is check the rubber boot that holds the wires between the frame and the doors. The wires inside the boot that run to the switches/motor can break or rub together..and cause problems.
