96 cabrio issues and a first post
Good morning all and greetings from down under
Just about to trade my 99 A4 (273000km) for a 96 cabriolet with the 2.6 ABC engine which has only done around 150000km but unfortunately it has a few issues and was seeking some clarification after gaining a lot of information on the forum. I am going to VCDS the car in a few days as just waiting for the 2x2 interface to arrive , thanks to the forum i did not drive 75 miles to find out my hex/can interface would not fit!
The car has no original keys for it and has a new barrel and key set(non remote just steel) with the car to be installed by myself (no problems) however...
It is showing all of the signs of the immobiliser being on with the starting and the cutting out a second or so after.
after searching through this forum and the interweb it seems that i have only have a couple of options.
1/ take vehicle to Audi and pay for new coding and keys for the ECU and immobiliser module, which will cost a fortune as Audi here charge like a wounded bull.
2/ Get ECU recoded to switch IMMO to off and not worry about it. I would have to send to the UK for that as no such thing exists in australia
3/ Possibly get Audi dealer to do the same thing? if they are able
4/ replace ECU with another? I have found one but it is for a manual not an automatic. Are they different or can i change the coding with VCDS?
Have i missed anything here at all with my options? and any advice for which way you would go appreciated.
We have no insurance issues here with having no immobiliser so that is not a factor at all for me at all. It is a softtop and the end of the day.
thanks very much and have a great day
Clay

Welcome
Congrats to the swap Clay, the 96 Cab is a lot rarer car than the A4.
Providing the issues are not too big in getting running, and they should not be as an AUDI owner the quality and engineering is great in these cars.
As for the keys all is good, my 94 Cab only has one semi original key for the ignition that has been swapped in its life as is different to the doors and boot. No playing with the ecu transfer or re-coding was necessary for my slightly older car.
The keys in my car have no transponder for the ecu to pick up and recognize. There is only the security system to deal with if it is the same as my car.
Though I have read on some models the original had a infrared sender on, I do not know much about these. And if its on the Cab of yours originally.
The security system was upgraded to a sensor alarm type immobilizer in my car and I doubt the original unit remains in my vehicle. I have since upgraded the alarm with the help of an professional to incorporate remote central locking and immobilization.
At the 150000km mark of your vehicle I am hoping the general maintenance has been performed at or around the correct klms, as you will know from this forum or already know or soon to find out.
As the car if it starts and dies could be another issue than the immobilizer. As my understanding goes if the car starts there is no immobilizer active. It should not kick in after a few seconds and shut off the car, it should stop the car starting full stop.
VCDS will shed some light to your situation in leaps and bounds..

Hi Danfil,
Thanks for the reply mate - the silence was ominous for a while.
I am sure you are correct for the earlier models and from I have read as well in that the earlier had no factory immobiliser built in. The later ones seemed to have the IMMO and the fob/switch style key unfortunately which is all linked up. Ie the key talks to the reader ring on the ignition which talks to the immo and then talks to the ECU. Much like the A4,A6 and A8 variants of the time.
Rosstech seems to suggest that is what they call Immobilizer generation 1 and the symptoms are the start then cut out within a few seconds. I agree with you and that an immobiliser does not normally allow the car to be started at all but as we know Audi sometimes does things to keep us on our toes.
Hopefully my 2x2 interface should arrive shortly and then i can have a look at the individual modules through VCDS and have also ordered from the UK a full set of locks, ignition and IMMO with transponder key which should arrive here on friday. About 120 aus$
Fingers crossed, remove instrument cluster, replace module, change ignition switch, reset ECU and see what happens as all should be talking to each other (in theory). Then i just need to code the central locking module to the new key.
If not happening i may not proceed with the trade then as goodness knows what other gremlins may be lurking in the electrics if someone has been playing around with little knowledge, let alone the cab top etc
Thanks
Clay
