What engine do you have in the car? 1986 is too far for my memory. I think you have a 4 cylinder..1.8 ..yes? The pulleys will need to come off. The crank pulley (as I recall) is held on with four 6mm allen bolts. You should not need to remove the big crank nut. Should not be that difficult. There should be metal timing belt cover at the top ..held on with an allen inside a rubber sleeve..hard to see.
