Default H4/H1 Wiring Diagram

Figured I would chop and paste this one together to show better clarity. And because I wasnt able to find one anywhere online that was this clear.

Default is it just me or is this getting confusing?

I'm trying to figure out how I would do this and your diagram/writeup is a great step, but I'm lost as to how I should start. Here's what I've been able to figure out so far, I might be bang on or way off:

The modification you did was with euro 90 headlight assemblies that use H4/H1 lights. But reading on a couple of other websites, it would seem that upgrade requires modifying the sidemarkers since they won't go be able to fit anymore. Is this true?

When I first started searching on how I could upgrade my lighting, some people told me to use RS2 lights since they would directly fit into my B3 but that I would need a B4 wiring harness and a kit from 034 motorsports (sounds too simple to be possible, is it?)

So basically, what I'm trying to figure out are these two things:
1. Am I getting this information right? I've been reading so many different things that I've gotten lost as to what's what.
2. What will I actually be able to find in North America? RS2? Euro lights? I've been searching eBay and classified sites forever but I can never see anything listed.

Default it is overly complex

Save yourself some $$ and just get two 5 pin relays. The only upside to this harness is you won't need to bypass your bulb out relay. Other than that it is twice as complex as needed. Use this one.

Default it's not the diagram that I find confusing, it's figuring out what I need to get and how to get it.

also, it's hard to tell what is and isn't a direct fit into my B3

Default one more advantage with the more complex harness..................

in the event of a relay failure you still have one side still backing you up to get home. Not fun driving home with just the 100 watt highs burning all those retinas coming at you.

Default comment (long)............................................ ...

Decide what you want.

RS2 is probably the ultimate but do you really need it for your driving habits or do you just want to be seen with it? RS2 is the most complicated and expensive. Shop Ebay.de for the best price but risk getting a bad seller.

Your next alternative is the H1 H4 Euro (wrap around) which is next in line for price, complexity and cost of installation hardware. Yes you lose the side marker. Again, Ebay.de would be your best source for finding the units and hope you find a good seller.

The least expensive but still a excellent upgrade would be the single bulb H4 E code units that come standard on the European cars. Hella or Bosch can be sourced again on Ebay.day. They can also be found here in North America. Then there is Depo (China) which is the least expensive and in my opinion work as well or better than the Hella single bulb H4 E codes. You can buy these for about $175 + clear corner markers. Build a simple harness to handle 100-150 watt bulbs and you are in business. You don't get the bragging rights with the single bulb H4's but you still get plenty of light on the road and quite a bit of cash left in your pocket.

BTDT with the Depos and IMHO they are the best deal out there unless you find a new set of Hella's or Bosch in Europe for 10 euros + shipping for $75 USD.

Default Not true... did you do the math?

As I noted at the bottom of my post, Watts divided by volts = amps. If you want to run 55w/100w H4's and 100w H1's thats 200w's per side total when the brights are on. 400w divided by 12v = 33.33333333333 Amps . 5 Prong relays come in 25A, 30A, 75A, 80A etc etc, 75A 5 prong relay was $38 bucks more then 2 30A 4 prong relays. Im on a budget, wire's cheap

And as noted below if a relay goes only 1 light will be out. I would much rather drive with 1 side out then have to use my H1 brights all the way home. That would really **** a lot of people off.

Both ways will work, you'd just have to run 55w/60w H4's instead of the 55w/100w, and not have a fail safe if a relay blows.

Default Re: H4/H1 Wiring Diagram

Check Waytekwire.com alliedelec.com newark.com delcity.net for the electrical components and tools.

If you are going to do follow that wiring schematic, get yourself a 4 or 5 fuse holder that has blade/spade terminals (either side or back connection) and a 4- or 6-gang terminal strip to clean up the wiring. There are also decent relay holders and marine-grade relays available.

Mini "automotive" relays are also becoming available, which handle either 20 or 25A depending on the contact set used (NO or NC).

Default Why does your H1 bulbs have two filaments? and your H4's have one?

That may lead to some confusion
