Besides better MPG you might not gain much depending on which engine you are going to swap.

The 180HP version only had 173T so basically the same as the 2.8

The 225HP version though has 207T so a nice little bump.
It doesn't feel anything like the coupe, but it is fun in its own way.

The swap isn't to get better MPG, and in your HP/TQ numbers you are making an assumption that i'm leaving the engine stock. While I might swap it over stock to begin with, to make sure everything is working proper, i will certainly be going with a built bottom end and bigger turbo in the future.

I never figured you would drop in a 1.8 just as it is.
Sure with time and money it can be tuned fairly well.

Least as I read unlike the 2.7 which has to be yanked to replace the turbo[s]
the 1.8 should not have to be.

late b4 cabriolet came with 1.8t in europe

I was not aware, so if you can round up motor mounts then a 1.8 should fit without too much hassle in a B4 chassis?

Last I recall the cab ended in 1998 in the US so it lived on longer in Europe?

Correct non turbo, but same block and head. similiar situation as the 7a vs 3b or aan. same castings with different "finishes"
