Automatic or manual? I think you indicated an automatic. If it is an automatic..check the ATF level. If that is Okay..when was the last time the transmission was serviced? Check the gear oil level in the differential too..make sure the gear oil is up where it is supposed to be, that is leaking out the gear oil fill hole when you remove the fill plug..on level ground, engine off. A low amount of gear oil will make the differential sing..not good.

There are two checks. One is the ATF level with the dip-stick. The process to check the ATF level is transmission warmed up, engine running at idle with transmission in PARK (hand-brake on)..the level on the dip-stick should be between the two marks.
To check the gear oil in the differential..the car must be elevated and level. Engine OFF..(and I am going by memory here..so I could be wrong about the wrench size) There should be a 17mm allen plug or 17mm head fill plug on the side of the diff.
Remove the fill plug and some gear oil should dribble out...it may be low. There should be a drain plug the same as the fill plug. Once the fill plug is out..you should drain the gear oil and then refill with some quality 80w90. Fill the gear oil till it is running out the fill hole..that sets the level..and reinstall the fill plug.
The gear oil may be low and decades old.
Sorry I could not find a picture on a DIY for the gear oil.
