EPA numbers are still a sham imo. I'm only getting about 18mpg and I've yet to take it pass 5000 Rpms (break-in). I'm hoping it gets better (only on my second tank) but I cannot see this thing ever getting better than 22-23 mpg city in the real world and 28mpg highway. We will see.

I would imagine due to the decreased performance, and engine output, that the A3 would enjoy a noticeable MPG advantage over the S3. The S3 it noticeably faster in all situations. Maybe if you are driving around closed-loop all the time, then they would be about equal, but driving around closed-loop would require for you not to exceed 20% throttle.

Biggest sham ever on a window sticker...

Even my test runs (about 10 gallons of gas) of super conservative, driving miss daisy, driving, I barely break 24 in 50-50 city, highway driving. City mileage is the biggest lie, I never break 12, no matter how easy I take it.

I do the math AND go by the computer in my tests.

If you look at the transmission gears of the A3 versus S3, it results very difference RPMs vs MPH. I made this chart which I believe is correct.

I believe this this a big reason the S3 delivers much worse fuel economy than the A3.

While we're talking about economy, I'll throw in my recent APR'd A3 results. After about 200 miles of 50/50 city driving, getting 28.5 mpg average. On a 400 mile road trip for the holiday, I got 34.4 while driving around 75-80 in fast flowing traffic.

That sounds great.

I completed a journey to from Indianapolis to Starkville, MS and back home today. I added 1,000 miles to my A3 and I was averaging 34.2 mpg cruise controlling on the interstate to and back.

Only thing I question is the amount of gallons the A3 holds. AudiUSA.com site says the 2.0T has a 14.5 gallon tank, but whenever I refuel from the E, I get like 12.9 gallons refueling.

That sounds right to me. All newer cars have a decent reserve, usually 2 gallons

Default Try shifting around 1800 rpm

The S3 peak torque curve starts at 1800 rpm. If you manually shift at that rpm you will improve your mpg.

Dennis, that is significant data. I didn't even think to check on the gear ratios or think that the tranny was different at all. Clearly the EPA didn't know this either when making their estimates.

My rationale was that if I kept out of the 220 or above power band, I'd be getting the same mpg as an A3. You've definitely cleared up the mystery.

You DEF should start a thread on this... I'm pretty sure I would have gotten a TDI A6 had I known the mileage on the S3... Maybe you can save others from making a decision without all the correct information.

Thanks again.

Tried it... Still never broke 12 in the city.
