S3 S-tronic Gear Ratios
Here are the specifications per the AoA S3 page:
Gear ratios: 1st 2.923
Gear ratios: 2nd 1.833
Gear ratios: 3rd 1.308
Gear ratios: 4th 0.969
Gear ratios: 5th 1.037
Gear ratios: 6th 0.813
Gear ratios: Reverse 3.264
Gear ratios: Final Drive 4.769 / 3.444
Can someone explain why the 4th gear ratio is less than 5th gear? I noticed something similar on the A3 specifications.
If anyone has a good tutorial reference on S-tronic from Audi, could you post a link.
Thanks.

I found this Audi technical document, but it doesn't seem to answer my original question.

I will continue looking.

Not overlooking the possibility that someone else could be correct (in this case MikeSS) I researched the issue a bit. From the AoA website spec’s for the TTS which has a 6-speed S-Tronic it appears gears 1-4 use the lower (numerically higher) final drive ratio and the top two gears (5 & 6) use the higher (numerically lower) final drive. Applying this to the S3 I came up with the following table.
1 2.923 4.78 13.97194
2 1.833 4.78 8.76174
3 1.308 4.78 6.25224
4 0.969 4.78 4.63182
5 1.037 3.44 3.56728
6 0.813 3.44 2.79672
This provides the sort of progressive steps in overall gear ratio the OP was looking for. This is further confirmed on pages 32-35 of the Self-Study Program for the 6-speed S tronic (link provided in a previous post). These pages show gear speeds 1-4 using output shaft 1, while gear speeds 5 & 6 use output shaft 2.
