does anyone know if the headunit in the current 2015 a3 convertibles will be updated to support Android Auto / iOS Car Play?? some things i've read suggest it's coming in some 2015.

i believe the hardware is compatible, but don't know if audi would do feature updates post release.

if not official update, could new firmware be user updated when 2016 is released with android auto and ios car play?

Personally? I doubt it. Audi made a big deal about the MIB-II systems being upgradable for new features but that's only in the 2016 6/7 and the new TT & Q7 (you've got the older MIB). Even then though, there's no guarantee.

I got to go to an open house at AoA HQ this past weekend and talk to a (the?) product manager for the A3s and S3s. Sadly, she told me they had no plans to roll out Android Auto to our vehicles until the '17/'18 model years at the earliest.

I also spoke with the gentleman responsible for keep us happy customers after we have already joined the Audi family. (Great guy!) Maybe if enough of us chime in, we can get them to change their mind about the software update.

So far, Audi has only announced Android Auto for the upcoming Q7 and the new A4 (just revealed).

Audi has shown Android Auto in a non-production S3 at Google IO in 2014, and again at 2015 CES, but has made no further announcements of availability on the A3/S3.

No Android Auto mention, but there was this article today about an A3/S3 refresh next year:
