I was really wanting another hatchback like my 900, but there isn't an "executive" hatchback for sale in the us, and no, the compact suvs aren't the same thing as a car with a hatch on it. The S3 sedan with a fastback (ala hatch), would really be my ideal. A non-truncated hatchback with a slope.

Very nice car but it's larger than I'd like and more than I want to pay too. Another option is the tesla model s, also too large and pricey. Ditto porsche panamera. So you know where I'm coming from, the lack of availability of a sunroof on the Golf R is what finally tilted the scales over to the S3.
I was looking to get a combo of attributes similar to my Saab:
- luxury (leather, sunroof, amenities, swankiness)
- practicality (cargo, hatch, back seat, fuel econ)
- performance
- affordability (< $50k)
Lots of options if you take the hatch out of the picture. Idk about america being anti-hatchback? From my pov, a hatch is the absolute best car design. The only reason I'm not getting one is that the car companies refuse to sell them here (modulo econo boxes).

Bay Area, CA. They identified one that matched my specs on the east coast and said it would cost a couple grand to ship it across the country.
It's gonna look a lot like this one...

Seems there are a few like I want but they are all the way on the west coast. Same deal, thousands to get one shipped so I'm ordering...

We are patiently waiting for the '16 order books to open as we will be doing European Delivery in mid Sept. According to our dealer, we are looking at mid April and we are also wondering if the S3 will come in a convertible version bound for the US. (That is the big unknown at the moment)
