Magnetic ride for S3?
Hey all.
Thanks to the input of several of you on this forum, I'm going to place an order soon for a 2017 S3.
The biggest thing I'm struggling with is the Dynamic package. Living in New England, the roads here are pretty crappy with lots of potholes. I'm concerned that if I get mag ride, I'll always have to set it on comfort mode and won't get much benefit out of it (and the 19" wheels won't help). Am I better off with the standard 18" with standard shocks instead?
Otherwise I was just going to choose Prestige, primarily to get the B&O system and Tech package.
Thanks in advance for your input.

I enjoy the utility mag ride provides, and it's independent of your wheel choices. It would still function with your 18" wheels if you needed to switch over from 19 or for winter weather.
However, if it's a choice between mag ride and B&O/Tech - I'd choose the later every time (personally). I also live out in the country here in Chicagoland and the roads are brutally bad coupled with our winters so the 19s can be painful (I think I'm going to switch over to 18s full time). However, I do enjoy utilizing the different driving modes during the summer months.

The mag-ride is the best 'new' feature Audi has had in 10 years IMO, but with potholes, I'd think you'd want 18" tires over 19"- the Mag-ride aside.

I have ordered a 2017 with Black optics, Tech package, B&O, resonator delete and red calipers.
Very sporty looking and feeling, but still not as a harsh daily Boston drive (stiff suspension) like it would be in a real sports car (911).
That is just my modest opinion.......
As far as the New England roads, look far ahead and learn to drive like you are in a slalom course.....

Taming a harsh ride.
The roads here in NY are quite poor to say the least. Over the years I'd discovered a trick that really improves overall ride quality ... lighter wheels.
I switched the 18" wheels on my new S3 to lighter 19" wheels (21 lbs) and the ride quality improved rather dramatically. Lighter wheels tend to glide over road imperfections and don't land as hard in the ruts as heavier wheels do.
Of course you can get lighter 18" wheels, but 19" wheels definitely look more sporty on an S3.
And whatever you do, fight any urges to have the car lowered. I wasted money on H&R lowering springs and had them removed within a week. Talk about a harsh ride.
Good luck with your new car!

I live in Beverly Mass on the North Shore and work in Woburn, which arguably has the worst roads in the state. The magnetic ride is considerably more comfortable than I thought it would be and way more comfortable than my BMW 1 series with M sport package. I think the large 19" wheels just roll right over most potholes.
I agree on the slalom course. I learned where every pothole was on my route to work. Some potholes that I avoided in my BMW I roll right over in the Audi.
Comfort mode is a great compromise between performance and comfort. I would say definitely go for it.

We have a 2016 S3 with the Black Optic performance package and we live in Metro Detroit, if there are worse roads I haven't come across them.
I was worried about 19" tires and mag ride. Bought a set of S3 18" rims with winter tires and planned on just putting the 18's on all year if the ride was too harsh.
But so far its been great. For some reason I prefer the " Automatic " setting to comfort.
I realize that the BO wheels are some of the heavier 19's but so far they have held up amazingly well to some bad potholes that were unavoidable.
We took a long trip in the S3 and it was nice to be able to drive in dynamic when roads conditions permit.
I bet that you will like mag ride.
Also love B&O sound and the Tech package.

get the mag ride. I live in springfield and I have a loaded prestige. the sales guy is a major audi fan [no really] and he said the lease he had was great but regretted not getting the mag ride. the comfort ride is good for highway and when you just want to cruise. auto is the recommended setting for every other situation outside of back roads and youre wanting to play on them.
