Default My OCD answer to "lack of homelink button"

Ranting over the lack of homelink buttons and not a fan of having my garage door remote hooked on the sun visor, I set out to find a "clean way" (not to say ocd) of having my garage door remote button hooked up to the car's controls.

I found that some euro models have a hillstart switch on the center console in place where we have just a cover plate. I purchased the "hillstart" switch hooked it up both to the car's illumination and my garage door remote which now sits inside the armrest compartment.

here are a few pics:

finished setup

adding hillstart switch to center console

wiring hillstart switch with garage door remote

running wires inside center console

Wow... thats very clever!

How much was the switch? How does it activate the garage door opener?

We're all different I suppose. You can't live with the remote in either 1) the armrest, 2) the door pocket or 3) the cup holder, but then you drape some sloppy looking jewelery around the shift lever. I don't get it, but it is your car I guess.

One is an awesome fix to a legitimate annoyance...the other is most likely a good luck charm.

No need to be such a curmudgeon.

Just enjoy a nice mod and let the man be!

That's pretty ingenious, great job! That's definitely more useful than what is currently occupying that space on the center console.

Valboo -
Sorry to come across as so negative – it does seem to be a well done mod and useful as well. No disrespect intended.

This is indeed a brilliant job. Very clever and transparent. Something to look into as I'm pretty OCD as well. What Audi put there originally is sort of laughable. If you were in the USAF and submitted a clever suggestion, they would reward your effort. Give Audi Gmbh a call!

Here is link to sourcing the switch:
BKS-Tuning Audi A3 8V hillstart control switch - chrome (OEM) OEM VW Audi Parts - Interior - Exterior - Lighting

It activates the remote by hardwiring the momentary switch contact from the "hillstart switch" directly onto the contacts of the garage door remote:
