First time poster, long time lurker. I just recently picked up a 2015 A3 Technik with 18 inch wheels. The exact tire size is 225/40R18. A friend of mine offered to give me his set of old winter tires with 17 inch rims, size 225/45R17. They have the same section width and very similar tire diameters. I was just wondering if there are any issues with using my friend's tires on the A3 that I may not be aware of?

You can use the tires I believe, but not sure about the wheels. What vehicle are they from? Tire Rack shows the two tire sizes you mention as OEM for the A3 Premium.
I believe the bolt pattern for the A3 is 5-112. The wheel width and offset you would have to check, maybe with the Audi site or a dealer. If the 225/45R17's are from a different brand, the bolt pattern, width and offset could all be different form what you need for your A3.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. It looks like my friend's wheels won't fit. He had a 2009 Nissan Sentra. The bolt pattern is either 4-114 or 5-114. Thanks for your help though. At least now I know what to look for.
