S3 owners: which other cars did you consider?
#11
Alfa Quadrifoglio Verde was the only alternative, but since it is only RWD and manual, my wife decided she wanted the S3 as her DD.
My Carrera S if phenomenal, but in the Northeast you need a AWD therefore my Jeep SRT is my winter weapon.
Good luck!

Wanted and put deposit down on a Golf R, base, MT. The numbers didn't make sense, looked for MT S4, couldn't find any. So ended up with the S3, liking it a lot so far. Though still would prefer a third pedal.

I drove a BUNCH of cars before I settled on Audi and my S3. Not sure if this will help you but.....
- Subaru WRX STI
- BMW 335I
- Caddy CTS
- Chevy Impala LTZ - (don't kick me off for this but I actually liked this car a lot for a mid sized sedan)
- Golf R
- Golf GTI
- Nissan Maxima
- Nissan 370z
- Honda Civic SI
- Honda Accord Sport Sedan
- Scion FRS
- Ford Focus ST
- Ford Fiesta ST (man what fun to drive but so small inside)
In the end the overall look of the S3 did it for me. I felt like it was a fast sporty car that wasn't a boy racer (I'm 45) that had some class.
I've noticed that the S3 doesn't get much love in some of the car mags. Car & Driver gushes over the Golf R but doesn't say much about the S3. It almost seems like the red headed step child. I wonder if it's because Audi doesn't advertise with them much.
BTW - great job you have there!

Nissan Maxima
BMW 228
Infiniti Q50
Acura TLX
Ford Fusion Platinum
Volvo S60
Fiat 500x (out of curiosity)
Mazda6
The S3 was by far the most intriguing, unique, and powerful car I drove out of the bunch. It was definitely the priciest, but I got it for $3000 below invoice, so I'm happy.

1) BMW M240i - Didn't want another 2-door car as my previous cars were all 2-doors. Also, the interior is 90% same as my previous 2001 BMW 330ci, so no thank you!
2) VW Golf R - I had 2011 Golf for 5.5 years, the body is practically the same, plus it R doesn't have a sunroof.
3) Mercedes CLA/GLA 45 AMG - Kinda ugly and too expensive compare to S3, with the 2.0L engine.

Drove a Golf R, STI, WRX, EVO, GLA45 AMG, M235i. Was looking at a Focus RS. The s3 wasnt even on my list of cars that I was considering.
Golf R - Almost bought one. The one on the dealer lot was the wrong colour and then the 16's were sold out and the interest rate on the 17's was not very good and they would not budge on price at all.
STI - Almost bought one. Only reason I didn't was the interior at the price point. Drive was excellent.
WRX - Felt there was not enough get up in the mid range. Interior not excellent.
EVO - Fun car, felt like it was a 10 year old car.
GLA45 - i LOVED everything about this car except the price tag. Interior (especially with the sport seats) was excellent. Had the sound, the feel, the drive. Was a truly a high end boy racer. It came in at close to 25k more than a golf r with the packages I wanted. Couldn't justify it.
m235i - Didn't like the interior, didn't like the rear wheel drive (I see snow for half my year). Furthermore, I had a 128i which was excellent, but it was in the shop a lot. I will never own a BMW out of warranty.
Focus RS - One available in Western Canada. Best deal I could haggle was 8k over msrp and I will not pay 8k over msrp for a ford I have never driven.
S3 - Found an excellent deal on a CPO s3, same price as a new golf R, but much better interest rate. I came from a B8 a4 which I literally had zero problems with. The car can be a cruiser in town (My wife doesn't even know there is a sport mode) or can be very fun as well. Surprisingly quick and feels very nimble. I owned a 500 Abarth a few years ago and I wanted something that was comfortable but fun to drive. The s3 gave me that.

Came from MK6 GTI...
I am long time VW/Audi guy and only had 2 car that was not out of my 12 cars in my 30 something life. 1 was a WRX and 1 was a Cavalier ( used it to while my TT sat in the garage, saving miles)
Others I considered:
CLA45....$$$$$$
STI.... Like the car the cheap power but interiors cheap
Mk7 GTI....I just love GTIs
S4....didn't want to wait for the face lift
