Use Siri with MMI SOLVED

Thanks David, but Carplay reverse compatibility is really a different thing altogether. Even though Audi touted the upgradability of the MMI hardware, I was never under the delusion that we'd get CarPlay in our A3/S3.
SIRI/Mic hijacking on the other hand is a major oversight on Audi's part and we'll never really know the truth. There is probably some legal document somewhere that could explain all this, but we'll never see it. It's inexcusable and a safety issue that we can't voice-text with our iPhones or use Siri. I am rather enraged and try not to think about it too much.
I've resorted to an iPad Mini that I drape over the MMI screen, it gives me everything I need - Music, video, Waze, Real, realtime traffic, Audio Books, and a TOUCH SCREEN, etc. For a fraction of the cost of Nav MMI. Car manufacturers are a real 5-10 years behind. Arg!!

Another workaround is to use the “Hey Siri” function (as long as your iPhone is close and USB powered). When you say “Hey Siri,” Siri responds over Bluetooth. Also an easy way to dictate text messages.

It's hard to imagine how it wouldn't work with a particular model since it's functionally no different from picking up your phone and picking another song that way - you're just having the Apple Watch do it for you.

It didn't work for me when I tried it (2015 A3, Nav MMI, Premium Plus)
The other day I had my iPhone plugged into USB power and paired as usual to BT. I said "Hey, Siri" and I got the visual confirmation. However, at that point, nothing--no response to anything I said. I think that the iPhone mic is active until it recognizes Hey Siri, then I don't know what's going on (it expects to hear something via BT, perhaps, but it does not get activated).

No, I was referring to Kwakkwakk's suggestion, which I interpreted it as just the iPhone. No Apple Watch here yet until they release the 2nd gen.
