Winter tire size question - 225/55/17 ??

Here's how it plays out...
225/40-18 3.5" 12.5" 25.1" 78.8" 804/mi 60MPH 10000mi N/A
225/45-17 4.0" 12.5" 25.0" 78.5" 808/mi 60MPH 10046mi -0.5%
215/50-17 4.2" 12.7" 25.5" 80.0" 792/mi 59MPH 9852mi 1.5%
225/50-17 4.4" 12.9" 25.9" 81.2" 780/mi 58MPH 9702mi 3.1%
I didn't even include your 205 size, it's not likely to have the load rating...
Anyway, you see how 215/50-17 is +1.5% taller...that's a really good fit. It's said that + or - 2% is a "fit", but I'd rather go TALLER, esp for snows.
Next issue is availability. You see 225/45-17 is also a good fit, and I know that's a common size. This late into the season, good luck with pricing and availability.
I just went from 245/45-18 to 235/50-18 for my allroad, normal all-seasons. The 17" size for snows is 235/55-17, a very common size. On our Q5, we use 235/65-17 Nokian, which ride GREAT.
lmk if you're still searching. atm, I'm using 2 sets of all-seasons. My good set I'll remove and store for next winter, instead of smoking them on hot summer pavement. I'll use my ****ty oem set for that, eventually the good set becomes the "smokers". It's very efficient because I never have to throw away a tire before it's worn down, and I always have the right amount of tread. I'm saying down't overlook how good fresh all-seasons in 17" can be. The price and performance of GOOD all-seasons makes the 2-sets strategy very tempting.

For instance, Conti Extremes are only $105
Continental ExtremeContact DWS
General Altimax at $94 are awesome in snow....
General AltiMAX RT43 (H- or V-Speed Rated)
The new BFG Comp is supposed to be awesome in snow...
BFGoodrich g-Force COMP-2 A/S
P7, Eagle Sport (what I just got, supposed to be good in snow, read the STAFF tests)
A lot of tire for the money at $112! See what I mean...?
General Altimax Arctic is right at that price point. If you see deep snow, that's the way to go, but if you can get away with all-seasons, 1-2-3 years like new....it's a good call.
