dsg in the passat
i know, this is the wrong forum, but i know a lot of you here have dsg's, and many of you are technically inclined and have a lot of vag knowledge. so the passat has a transverse engine mounting, just like the golf, jetta, tt, and a3, but it doesn't have dsg- why not? i thought it was because transverse engines don't support awd, but both the r32 and a3 have awd. is audi's awd system different than vw's, because the a3 3.2 and tt 3.2 are avialable with awd and a dsg transmission. are there any plans in the future to offer dsg in the passat?

I never understood this either.
I'm wondering if there's an economic reason such as limited production resources for the DSG, or a technical reason involving that single car's geometry.
Another good question is whether the Passat transmissions are all-new designs or simply the best-fit from an existing product line. My thought is that if those are new designs, we shouldn't expect to see them shelved any time soon. But if they're leftovers from some other product line, then maybe VW can still decide to start using DSGs in the future.

Whatever they call it, the new Passat uses a transverse engine and tranny setup with
Macpherson struts, instead of the A4 chassis which uses longitudinal engines and 4 link front ends. The new Passat uses a wider and longer version of the Golf/Jetta/Eos/A3 platform (which is internally called the PQ46 specialty platform - the Golf/Jetta get PQ35 and the upcoming vW Eos gets the PQ45).
Although the platform is called a B6, the chassis is known as the 3C. The A4 has a variation of the 8D or 8C chassis even though the platform is known as the B5, B6, or B7.
There, confused enough? ;-)<ul><li><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Passat">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Passat</a</li></ul>

Yeah, I knew it was a transverse-mount now--I was just noting that it isn't derived
from the A-platform that the TTs, Jettas, New Beetles, R32s, GTIs and A3s share. For whatever reason, these are the only mass production cars that are equipped with DSG.
