Default DSG slips and stutters

We've had check engine lights for about a year with our 2006 A3 DSG. The shop (not the dealer) could not locate the cause.

At first we thought it could be the coils; then recently we hoped that it could be related to the warranty extension about the crankshaft.

The car had started to show what we felt to be a mechanical slippage, i.e. the transmission. For example, rolling the car from a standstill a little aggressively will make that happen.

We had the dealer diagnose the issue for $300! Unfortunately the problem is "a common one with the transmission". The catch 22 is that it can be the controller which will cost about $2K+, or the transmission itself which will cost $8K+. (I don't have the paperwork with me right now; I may be quoting some of this wrong.) I am pretty sure the car is out of warranty at 100K+ miles.

Is this really common? I couldn't find related problems in the archive.

What to do? Replace, donate, just drive, or?

Thank you,
Ali

Has the transmission been serviced per schedule?

I can't remember any DSG related items right now but it had all the regular maintenance done. With paperwork!

I believe the service interval is 35k miles for your model year. You'd know if it had been done, it's $$$$$.

I don't know why dealer blow this off. It's critical to the proper operation of that gear box. It should not be ignored.

Thank you uberwgn. I think you're right.

The car has been in maintenance per schedule (of course! ). Unfortunately though DSG oil and filter has not been replaced.

I wouldn't know because we took the car in for free maintenance as long as it was available. Audi service did replace the engine oil filter and air cabin filter but there is nothing about the DSG. They list one oil filter and one cabin filter for the 35K service.

I guess we need to contact Audi at this point. :-/

Ali, since they completely blew off this critical piece of maintenance, perhaps they'll share in the cost of the new gearbox
