White Sludge in Coolant Reservoir
Forgive the newbie status, just bought a 2002 A3 Auto Hatch. This happenned yesterday, and smoke started coming from reservoir. Once it cooled down the white sludge was all that was in there. There was none of it in hoses in or out, so no idea what it is or where it came from...Please someone help. Local RACV auto club emergency assist had never seen it before....

so whats in the radiator itself? Looks like it could be that off the shelf fix a hole liquid pour in crap. It doesn't look like oil sludge...which would mean you had a gasket breach between an oil and coolant vain in the block...and you would have milky white stuff all in your oil crank. Seeing as how you didn't mention it...I would think you checked it...and it's fine.

Thanks for the reply. Have had a full cooling system flush and replaced a few hoses and will just watch. Definitely not oil and when you get the stuff between your fingers it feels like powder based?. Betting on a hole fix measure of some description but certainly doesn't seem fatal.
Will advise if I find anything else. Ta
