Buy a 'gasp' BMW.
Fair disclosure…I have two and an E46 M3.

Quattro, especially the latest generation with significant rear bias, torque vectoring and sport differential is more about cornering performance than it is about all-weather use. The history of Quattro is in rally and motor sport.

Well, my worst fears have been confirmed: I've had 3 or 4 emails yesterday back and forth with a very forthright and knowledgeable Sr Manager, Product and Motorsports Communication - USA, who stated that the S5 will follow the S4: No manual transmission. I must say I was really impressed with him and his responsiveness. Ofcourse I am totally disgusted with corporate Audi. I have no doubt the 2017 S5 will please the masses with a great interior, infotainment center etc. However, it won't please those, like myself, for whom Audi has cast aside in the name of "fuel efficiency, tiptronic shifting" ad nauseum. Some people still like to DRIVE cars.

No so sure about the manual on the "2017" S5... there is an announcement due June 2 at corporate Audi regarding the intro of the A5...nothing about the S5 which is a ways off - and probably not until calendar year 2017....with or w/o a 6MT. Without a manual - look at the new Mercedes C43 AMG (not the C63) due out in a couple of months (and its not really a rebadged C450 - many changes). Although not a manual - its 9 speed - 0-60 in 4.6(est) and puts the S5 2017 new design to shame with looks. Like the 2016 newly designed A4/S4..Audi has lost its way - has lost its "look" - its as if they have given both designs a haircut and a "play safe" mode. Same applies to the A6..not nearly as pretty. Notice the advertisements for the A4 - only talks about the infotainment center...which is impressive. But there is more to a car than that - such as how it looks!

BMW has rumored that they will only sell three transmission, small, medium and large- all three being dual clutch autos. they are in fact manual transmissions with computer controlled shifting.
they would offer a stick, but it would just be an input to the computer to tell it to shift now. the cars will NOT have a clutch pedal
this allows then to reduce the number of design and engineering variants, while still offering manual or auto
i have driven manual all my life until my new audi came with a 8 speed auto

I'm not surprised about BMW. My wife just took delivery on what may be her last 6 speed manual - a 340i. When her lease is up in 3 years - you may be right. Although I'm not crazy about BMW's (does not compare to my 2013 S5 - although its much quicker from 0-60), the expense for car manufacturers is just too high to make manuals. I'll be surprised if Audi announces that the redesigned S5 for 2017 or 2018 - will offer a manual - unless someone tells me differently. That's why I'm considering the MB C43 when it comes out this fall - with its 9 speed electronic paddles (I know - not the same - but I may have no choice)

The latest edition of Car and Driver tested the new A4, and the article says a 6-speed manual will be available later in the year. I would think this would also apply to the new 5?
