Hi All,I'm shopping for an S5 V8 and I've heard people having issues with the automatic transmission. I wanted to know if its common and what to look out for? I've been told that 07/08 come with the 6 speed tiptronic and 09 onwards comes with 7 speed s-tronic, Is this true?Thanks in advance for all advice

IAW ZF recommendations rather than Audi or BMW for that matter. And yes, the S5 with V8 and automatic trans WILL have problems if the ATF isn't changed as well as the filter every 30-50K miles. Depending on how the car has been driven as well will affect transmission longevity.

Hard to say what to look for other than smooth shifting, etc. If the car is over 50K miles with no record of ATF changes you could predicate the sale on the ATF and filter change and pan cleaning…pay for it and base your decision on the quality of the drained fluid…you're only out the $300-400 it takes to change it vice the $6K for a rebuilt trans.

Sorry, can't help with the tiptronic. Was never into that transmission. But to answer your other question. The S5 V8 wasn't made with the 7-speed S-tronic dual-clutch transmission. The switch to the S-tronic happened with the mid-cycle refresh for the year 2013 onwards. That's also when they switched to the V6 SC. The S4 came with the S-tronic from the beginning and the early years have known mechatronic issues, but the S-tronic in MY2013+ is revised and updated and so far there are no reports of major failures like there are for the early S4s.

Did some more research and its a ZF 6HP28 transmission and it seems if it does not get serviced on time that it can have issues and need a full rebuild. I guess that's the same with all transmissions...

Check this link out on the transmission, seems the mechatronics aka valve body is the weak link...
