I have a '98 Audi Cabriolet. It needs the outer CV joints replaced. I would prefer to replace the entire axle. My repair station has either factory ($$$$) and Chinese knock offs. Anyone have any suggestions?

AT least if you just replace the rzeppa joint (<$100) you know what you have; i.e., the correct axle size/lenght, etc. It's not even that messy, you don't have to clean the old joint, just clip the clamp on the axle and drive the axle out of the rzeppa joint.

If you really want to be **** and gain reliability with a new axle (questionable given the possibilities to screw up with the wrong axle) just replace the inner joint boot after cleaning and lubing it with new CV juice.
